Lecture 2: Monograms



Requirement for monograms (strictly from a design POV)
1. Two or more letters
2. Interwoven,overlapping or combined

Who uses them?
-Used by artisans and craftsmen as signatures.
-We're indicators of social(family wealth) or commercial exclusiveness (participation in trade)
-Often appearing on badges,coins,shields

CHI RHO
-The symbol of Jesus Christ
-Consists of the first two capital letters chi and rho(XP) of a Greek word
-Often accompany by alpha and omega

The United Dutch East India Company
- based on a name "Vereenigde Oost-Indische CompagnieVOC"

Classical monogram
- very elaborate and elegant
-Influenced by various art movements: Gothic,Victorian,art nouveau
-Applied usually as.............

Modern monograms
-very minimal and commercial
-influenced by: Minimalism,pop art, postmodernism
-applied on virtually nowadays(wedding invitation,logos) but most commonly us in fashion
 Eg: gevency,fendi,Chanel,lv,Gucci

Norah jones,font smith,Anthony lane,one fund,first data, Joshua R.Davis(ambigram), Kathryn Ann Jackson,studio eight,fold it,Sean heisler,social generation,darkbird studio

What is Logo?
- instant public recognition



Type of Logo:

  1. Symbols (iconic)
    -instantly recognizable
    -memorable
    -clarity when reproducd in small sizes
    - ......









  2. Wordmarks (logotype)
    -script font: formality & refinement
    -thick font: strengthen & power
    -slanted font: motion & movement
    -examples: FedEx, Disney, CNN
  3. Combination Marks
    -examples: Starbucks, KFC, McD, Pringles
